How To Program Your Remote Control
Program Your Remote in 3 Easy Steps
It used to be that a remote control was a cinch to use.  One power button, a volume button, channel selections and perhaps a mute control.  No problem there.  But remotes today are much more complex, controlling not just your television but your satellite receiver, your VCR, DVD player, stereo... and the list goes on.  That's all great in theory, but those fancy remote controls won't do you any good if you can't figure out the programming.  Not to worry... we've got you covered in 3 easy steps.

1.  Pick Your Device

The first thing you'll need to do is pick which device you want to program.  Most remotes have separate buttons that correspond to the various devices:
  • SAT - controls the satellite receiver
  • TV - controls the television set
  • VCR - controls the VCR
  • AUX - controls one of several additional units, such as a stereo

Press the button of the device you want to program until the corresponding light begins to flash.

2.  Find Your Code
Now that you've picked your device, you'll need the appropriate code for your particular unit.  Codes for most manufacturers and brands can be found in the back of your remote control user manual.  Satellite subscribers can also typically go online to their provider's website and if all else fails, contact the manufacturer of your remote to get the necessary codes.

3.  Program Your Device

Using the keypad on your remote control, enter the number that's listed first for your device. When you've finished, enter the appropriate key to indicate you've completed your input. For some remotes, this might be the asterisk (*) while other remotes might use the pound key (#). The mode light on your remote control will flash again and, if your code was correct, you should be able to now control your device with the remote control. Test your results by turning the power on and off. Does it work? If so, you've just programmed your device.

If your code doesn't work the first time, don't panic. Most remotes come with several codes for the various device brands. If the first code doesn't work, start over using the next code and the next and the next until you get the right one.

What if your device isn't listed at all? Look through the list for "general" codes. If you can't find those, try scanning for your device. Your user manual should have specific advice for devices without a listed code.
